West Norwood

It was a huge privilege to be asked to work for this client again in her new house and be able to transform the rather dark, cluttered kitchen into a lighter, simpler space. We were also asked to redesign the bathroom which lacked a decent shower and had no storage. We began by addressing the boiler, which we relocated upstairs thereby gaining some space for the fridge. Once we had agreed on the lay-outs and the installation date approached sold as much as we could on eBay including the bath, thereby avoiding unnecessary landfill. We updated the badly insulated windows and replaced an unused door with a stunning slim opaque window - which lets in light while affording privacy when her clients walk past to access her practice in the back garden. We used ecological linoleum flooring here and in the bathrooms upstairs; employed British craftsmen for the cabinetry, which we took up to the ceiling for maximum storage and clean lines and sourced ribbed glass to match the existing 1930s doors. We reupholstered the favourite old Peter Dudgeon sofa, and rearranged the paintings, reframing a handful. We chose linen for the blinds from Fox Linton and Molly Mahon. The tiles came from Artisans of Devizes. When we reconfigured the bathroom and utility room we sourced a new enamel bath from Bette, who have a sound sustainability policy, and a simple, recycled ‘Marbleform’ basin from Claybrook studio, who also supplied the brassware. The beautiful handles for the bathroom cabinet are made out of green pebbles and came from Chloe Albery. These set the palette of ‘Ambleside’ green for the walls and matching Mazzani “leaf green” tiles, which have a 40% recycled content.
