West Berkshire

This represents my first deliberately sustainable project. We sourced ‘imperfect’ wall lights from Vaughan’s Outlet store and an old Czech school pendant from Etsy, which adds a twinkle to the study while the pattern disguises the LED bulb. We made an old railway finial into a lamp base. We stripped the walls (the lining paper had been painted in vinyl paint and so prevented the walls from breathing). We put in insulation on one wall, sprayed CorkSol insulation on another wall and painted all four rooms in Edward Bulmer biodegradable paint, made of natural pigments. We installed secondary glazing from Storm windows in order to keep the original windows. We sold and donated numerous railway books to charity and used the timber of the glass cabinets to create a new cabinet, half the size and painted it the same colour as the wall. We sourced carpet remnants made of 100% British wool and used recycled plastic underlay from Anglo Recycling Ltd. We hung curtains left over from old jobs and used furniture from the house. We inserting some old wallpaper into the back of the tall cabinet which served to to brighten it and help blend it with the walls. All the colours were chosen to complement the art painted by female members of the family prompting the name ‘the grannies gallery’ !
